Hey!
I started writing this scene last year but got too busy to release it. This morning, I decided to have some fun and finally finish it.
Happy Halloween! 🎃 👻

A loud honk rattled the windows of Milly’s car. Her eyes widened and she looked for the source of all this noise in her rear view mirror. The truck waiting behind her was massive. Its flashing headlights flooded Milly’s car.
A quick glance at the stop light told her it was indeed green. She gunned the engine and drove away as fast as she could. The truck immediately followed, hot on her tail. She switched lanes to get out of its way.
The love song was no longer playing on the radio. It was just the news now and, as usual, it sounded depressing. The truck’s driver flashed his lights impatiently one more time as he took over.
Milly sighed in relief. She needed a moment to catch her breath. She pulled into an abandoned parking lot at the side of the road and switched off the radio. Milly leaned back in the leather seat of her car. The corners of her mouth edged up slowly.
“Oh God.” She hid her smile behind her hand, even though there was no one around to see it.
Milly looked at her purse on the passenger’s seat. There was only one thing she wanted to do. Only one person she wanted to share this funny story with. She took out her phone and pulled up Hannah’s number.
It was almost midnight, though. It was too late to call Hannah. She would send her a text and then get back on the road. She started typing. But then she thought she saw something move outside. Milly peered through the window.
It probably wasn’t a good idea to stay here much longer, by herself and in the dark, she suddenly realized. She looked through the passenger seat window again, trying to identify what she had seen.
About 20 feet away, a dark figure moved in the shadows. Milly narrowed her eyes. The shadowy figure had a weird glow around him. She wasn’t sure what to think of it. Was he wearing some kind of safety light?
Her heartbeat picked up, the back of her neck tingled. She checked if the doors of the car were locked. They were. Still, her gut told her to get out of here as fast as she could.
Milly started the engine. She giggled nervously. Her hands were trembling. This was real life, she knew, but she suddenly felt as if she was in the middle of a Halloween movie.
Her hand was clammy and sticky as she grabbed the steering wheel to direct the car back onto the road. Before she could shift the car into drive, a sudden, loud crash made her scream.
Shards of glass flew onto her lap and a rush of cold air hit her in the face. She clapped her hands over her ears. A weird scent wafted into the car. It reminded Milly of blood and… burned plastic.
Milly stopped breathing when she saw a hand reach through the broken passenger seat window. It was a big hand. Too big. So big Milly had a hard time believing her own eyes.
A bright shimmer made her focus on the hand’s fingers. These too were far from ordinary. At least two of them seemed to be made of some sort of shiny metal. Loose strands of skin still hung around them.
Milly was shaking uncontrollably now, pulling her legs up against her chest. She pushed herself against the door to get as far away from the hand as possible. But it reached for her. Sharp fingertips came within inches of her face.
She sat there, frozen, for several long moments. The crickets that had been so loud outside just 5 minutes ago, now were quiet. There really was nothing but silence. It was surreal. Unnatural.
Then, the giant hand suddenly pulled back. Milly knew better than to be relieved. She could already hear her attacker grabbing the edge of the car window and lowering himself to look into the car.
The brief pause gave Milly time to think, though. She couldn’t just sit here and wait for whatever creature that was attacking her to get into the car. She had to put up a fight.
Milly unfolded herself from the corner and quickly placed her elbows on the car seat. The muscles in her legs were stiff and tired, but she would just have to will them into moving when the time came.
The man outside took a very long time to lower himself and face her. It was almost like he was in no rush to grab her. Or maybe time had just stopped moving. Either way, Milly was in position when he did come.
Bloodshot eyes with bright yellow irises met hers. Milly couldn’t stop her scream as soon as she noticed the shiny cheekbones shimmering under ripped, pale skin.
Even though black spots blurred her vision, she still managed to force her right leg into kicking at the scary, robot-like face. A loud clank, and then a brutal crack, filled the air as her foot made contact.
Pain seared through her. Her foot started throbbing. Milly let out a primal yelp. Tears sprung into her eyes. The loud crack had not come from the monster grinning at her. She had done zero damage, except to herself.
Milly forced herself to take in the stained stumps of rusty teeth the creature flashed at her. His bright yellow eyes didn’t blink. On top of his head, he had a weird pirate hat. Milly’s mind struggled to process what she was seeing. A pirate?!
Whatever this thing was, it didn’t seem to be in a hurry. The pirate looked down at the broken shards of the window and studied them calmly. The creature even tilted its head as it flicked away some glass with a metal finger.
Adrenaline finally kicked in properly. Milly tried to manoeuver her foot back onto the gas pedal. It was throbbing but didn’t do much else. She couldn’t move it. No matter how hard she willed her foot to push down, it didn’t budge.
“I can’t get away,” flashed through her mind. A sharp, metallic laugh announced the pirate knew it too. He reached for her again. The dead skin hanging off of the metal fingers was the last thing Milly saw before they closed around her neck.
Milly gasped, struggling to breathe. The pirate had stopped laughing and all was quiet around her again. “Is this how you know you’re going to die?” Milly wondered.
But then a flash of light and the loudest clap in the air made them both flinch. Her lungs screamed. There was a brutal clank outside. The pirate’s grip loosened.
Air rushed into Milly’s lungs again. Her whole chest screamed from relief. She opened her eyes just in time to see the monster’s eyes widen while some sort of red laser light wrapped itself around its neck like a lasso.
The next moment, the pirate flew back, as if someone was pulling a chord. “I was looking for you,” a woman’s voice said coolly. Milly couldn’t see a thing but heard metal scraping over the ground.
“2B, I got him!” the voice now yelled.
Milly rubbed her neck, her hands shaking uncontrollably. She was alive. The pirate was no longer in the car. Someone had managed to pull him off. But who? Another blinding flash of light made her cover her eyes with her arm.
And then, all was quiet once more. Milly waited three seconds before she dared to look around. She yelped when she noticed a friendly face looking at her through the broken car window. A human face.
“Hey, sorry about that,” the woman said. She was wearing some kind of uniform. Milly could only see the collar and shoulder emblems.
“He got away from us,” she continued with a grin. “You okay?”
“W-w-what was that?” Milly stuttered.
“Space pirate,” her savior replied immediately. “Nasty creatures.” She wrinkled her nose.
Milly blinked a few times. This wasn’t real. This wasn’t happening. She lifted her shaking hands in front of her eyes. When she lowered them, the woman was still there. Oh my God.
She pointed at Milly’s leg. “911 should be here soon to help you out.”
Milly just gaped at her, then nodded slowly.
“I’m Captain Sanders, by the way,” the woman said, pointing at her badge on her chest now. She winked.
Milly nodded again, too stunned to do anything else.
The Captain brushed a piece of glass off of her sleeve. “Love your music. 2B even likes it now.” She grinned. “That took a while. She kept saying she didn’t understand why humans scream so much.”
Milly frowned and tilted her head, still caught in disbelief. She winced as the muscles in her neck protested.
“Alright, I can hear the sirens. Gotta run!” the Captain said with a final wink. And just like that, she was gone. A bright flash lit up the car and area around it once more. A *whoosh* sound rung through the air.
Milly stared at the empty space behind the broken window until the cops pulled into the parking lot.
